Letters to the Editor: Volume VI

Voltron
Dear Mr. Law,

I am looking for an anime from 1981, entitled Go Lion. It is the anime that was dubbed and edited into Voltron. I have contacted the American company that produces Voltron, World Events Productions, and the Japanese company that created Go Lion, Toei Company Ltd. Neither one of them were very helpful. I want to know if Go Lion has ever been available on VHS or LD in Japan, and if it has and is out-of-print, what company released the title and how I can get in touch with them.

Thank you,
Amira Boctor

PS: I love Digital Manga - you guys brought one of my favorite anime, Tenshi ni Narumon! to the States. I have pre-ordered the DVD and I can't wait for it to come out! I am also waiting for the DVD of FLCL.

Dear Amira,

Marc Handler, the ADR writer and director of FLCL, has worked extensively on Voltron throughout its US History and had this to say:

"This is going back a LONG time...

"World Events would not know anything about Go Lion's release in Japan. Toei would be the company with official information about that. If they don't have an answer I don't know of any other official source to check with -- very probably if Toei didn't say, 'Yes,' it means it never was released on VHS or Beta (doubtful it would have been released in any other form as Go Lion predates CDs, etc). I'm afraid trying to get this info is just going too far back in time -- the current people at Toei probably weren't around at the time, plus Japanese companies are often not that well organized with this type of info.

"You might find a thirty-something Japanese FAN who was a kid at the time who remembers whether it was out on video -- or check with a veteran video store owner in Japan - but that is like detective work ---- I can tell you that I used to haunt the anime stores in LA at the time (there were only a few in Japanese areas of town) and there were no Go Lion tapes - so, again, I think it's very likely that it never was released on tape in its Japanese form.

"Yayy FLCL!"
