Overall: 7.6
"Hand Maid May" succeeds at that which many before have also succeeded. Some new jokes mixed with some old jokes, a few familiar personalities shuffled around and the same old story gets one of Ikariya's version upgrades.
Story/Character Development: 6.0
Several familiar plot devices thrown together to rehash a mish-mash of tired ideas. Clever comedy elements are the driving force of this anime.
Art/Animation: 7.5
Bright and bouncy art. Katsuso Hirata's character designs, though not astoundingly original, are memorable and clearly descriptive of each character's personality.
Translation/Acting: 7.5
Not only is ZRO's English dub acting well timed, believable and appropriately cast, the translation remains true enough to the original Japanese to have Kasumi refer to a robot with the familiar honorific "-chan."
MPAA Equivalent: PG-13
Those closer to Rena's age should avoid this due to blatant sexual humor and some language.
Format: 9.5
The DVD menu keeps with the theme of the show, starting out in "Nanbara's Room" searching for the right keyword to access the DVD itself. Moving onto Cyberdyne's homepage, May politely explains the functions of the main menu in either English or Japanese depending on the language format selected.
X-Factors
Innocent Leering Factor: 5.0
Whether up-skirt or down-blouse, Kazuya's staring habit is easily dismissed because of his considerate, good-natured behavior at any other moment. Perverted Kazuya is only a blush away from returning to Polite Kazuya.
Do Not Try This At Home Factor: 9.0
For a brief moment, Cyberdyne's web address flashes across Kazuya's monitor. Do not follow that address hoping to purchase a Cyberdoll. It is not owned by Cyberdyne, nor Pioneer Entertainment; May's "How may I please you?" is interpreted ... differently ... by the girls of this website.
