Overall: 8.0
"Crest of the Stars" is a promising space opera in the grand tradition of golden age SF literature, with a cast of interesting characters at the threshold of an interstellar war. Unfortunately, the fun is mostly still ahead -- in these first few episodes, it's space opera without violence or overt conflict.

Story: 7.0
Awkward exposition nearly sucks the life out of this show before it can get rolling. Fortunately, it begins to gather speed once Jinto boards the Gosroth.

Character Development: 8.5
Jinto and Lafiel are well-developed, as are supporting characters like Captain Lexshue. Also, Lafiel's cultural aversion to intimacy and informality reflects upon a culture that has grown emotionally sterile.

Art/Animation: 9.0
The character designs are compelling and endearing. The animation itself is absolutely first-rate for a television series. It's clear the animators put a lot of love into this show.

Translation: 7.5
Overall satisfactory, though some lines (especially those laden with technobabble) are awkward. Many lines are probably twisted into contortions by the need to lip-synch dialog.

Acting: 7.5
Average for both Japanese and American casts. The American dub features an older-sounding Jinto, while the Japanese one favors a more adolescent characterization. Choose your flavor.

MPAA Equivalent: PG
Mild violence.

X-Factors

Rich Background: 9.0
With an invented language and alphabet, as well as textured cultures and societies, "Crest's" terrain is fascinating place to visit.
