"The Vision of Escaflowne" director Kazuki Akane completed the "Escaflowne" movie, "A Girl in Gaea," in time for a premiere at
this year's Anime Expo at the Disneyland Hotel. After years of continuous work, this respite allowed him and his producer, Minoru
Takanashi from Bandai Visual, some time to shoot the breeze with Akadot.
What was the most recent book you read?
KA: "Time Writing."
MT: The most recent book I read was the "Dark Tower" series by Stephen King.
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
KA: Teleportation.
MT: If I had a superpower, it would be to turn everything into gold.
What is the best most recent animated film you've seen?
KA: This. "Escaflowne." I haven't seen anime lately because I have been working hard on this animation film.
MT: Of course the best is "Escaflowne," but the second best is "Iron Giant."
Do you have a personal motto?
KA: "Work hard. Try hard."
MT: I have two personal mottoes: "Don't do things that are pointless," and "Don't give up on things that tend to force you to give up."
What's your nickname?
KA: Akane-chan.
MT: My nickname is Mino-kun.
What was your favorite childhood toy?
KA: Legos.
MT: My favorite toy was a plastic model plane.
If you were a member of a special forces unit, what would your code name be?
KA: (laughs) Codename…Escaflowne. (laughs) Ronin.
MT: Please give me a minute or two.

What's your poison?
KA: Favorite poison?
It's like a vice. Smoking too much, eating chocolate...
KA: Right now, I don't have one. Other than work...
Work? (laugh)
MT: Takanashi: Work and sake.
Who would you give the Nobel Prize to?
KA: I can't think about it.
MT: The Nobel Peace Prize...I'd give it to President Dae Jung Kim. He's (South) Korea's President.
And in the current international climate, perhaps Takanashi's words will prove prophetic.
