Dub Track Letters

You know, according to the hit counters, "The Dub Track" is becoming a popular little column. But I wouldn't know it from my email box. C'mon, folks! Want my opinion on a dub? Better yet, have an opinion of your own? Write me! I want to hear from you!

For example:

I enjoyed your column on Spanish dubs on Akadot. You'll have to look into the French dubs on "Evangelion" and "Queen Emeraldas" sometime.

Anyway you made an error regarding the Spanish dub of Saber Marionette J (or should that be Chica Marionette J?). You said that Cherry had retained the name "Cherry" while Lime and Bloodberry received Spanish names. I reviewed the Spanish dub on my copy of SMJ and Cherry was called "Cereza", not Cherry. So all three of Otaru's marionettes acquired Spanish names.

I trust you appreciated the extra on the final DVD of BGC Tokyo 2040 which included pictures and data on the voice actors for the principles, both English and Japanese? If you haven't seen it yet you'll be pleased to know that Hilary Haag looks as cute as she sounds.

Oops. I know how that happened. My Spanish isn't good enough to pick out words I'm not expecting to hear. For example, I only know that Bloodberry is called "Zarzamora" because I asked Blanca. In Cereza's case, I tried to get the name from the activation scene, when the computer voice speaks her name. The actor portraying the computer pronounced "cereza" with just the slightest "ch" sound, and I thought he said "Cherry". Big embarrassing mistake on my part -- I should have asked Blanca for all three names.

Ah, well. At least that proved my point about the pitfalls that exist when trying to review a dub that isn't in one's one language.

I received a couple of letters from actors on the "Magic User's Club" dub. As you might expect, they were quite pleased.

Ryan,

My name is Jamie McGonnigal and you recently reviewed the Magic Users Club which I am one of the voice actors on. I just wanted to thank you for such a kind and generous review. I really appreciate it. I am somewhat new to the VA scene and I am glad to hear that my work is being enjoyed. Again thanks so much! Best Wishes!

Jamie

Hey Ryan!
Jamie McGonnigal just sent me the link to your review of Magic User's Club!, and it was terrifically entertaining. Thanks for your attentive ear and well-chosen words. I'm relatively new to the world of anime--mostly, I voice TV and radio commercials--and wondered if you have any favorites that I can check out, both as a performer and consumer... I read a bunch of your reviews but couldn't find your list of to-die-for animes!

What nice letters! Funny, though, I've never gotten any "thank you" letters from the actors on the "Maze" or "Lost Universe" dubs... :-)
