Rumina Asagi kisses his dreams of a rose-colored high school life good-bye as he sets forth into the depths of the unknown... A whole new world that lies deep beneath the city of Tokyo... The Underground. Teamed up with Chelsea Roleck and Ginnosuke Isuzu, their mission is simple- to rescue the Maiden of Life, Ruri from the hands of the Company.

The main character Rumina is a cocky katana-wielding martial artist from Tokyo, found to be gifted with the powers of the element of wind- a power rare amongst those known within the world of the Underground. He battles masters of flame, water and electricity among other powers, seeking to stop the Company and whatever plans they have for Ruri. Chelsea Roleck, master of gravity and former Company member, fights alongside Rumina in their share of a common goal. Between these two, nothing can get in their way!

Artist Akinobu Uraku's style has a sense of simplicity, and yet there is also a certain complexity to how everything is composed in each scene. The characters themselves are interesting, their personalities carefully crafted to act as foils to one another, each being unique in a way that proves necessary to the other characters as well as the story as it progresses.

Recently released as an anime series, Tokyo Underground offers readers a mix of action and sci-fi with a touch of fantasy and romance. The first of its books released in 1998, Tokyo Underground is currently at its eighth volume with volume nine due out July 22. Monthly installments are printed in Enix's telphone book of Gangan Comics.
