Vash from 'Trigun'

After making an appearance at the 2002 Otakon on the east coast, Trigun creator Yasuhiro Nightow continued his journey westward to the next convention in San Diego. Akadot was able to catch up with the camera-shy, yet intriguing Yasuhiro Nightow for an exclusive interview at Comicon. Besides discussing his popular manga series and inspiration for Trigun characters, Nightow also talks about some of his favorite American things.

Akadot: How did you decide to become a manga artist? Were you influenced by anyone?

Yasuhiro Nightow: I have drawn since I was little, even back in kindergarten. I liked to draw, even without any kind of story. Early on, I was addicted to "Fujio Akatsuka" (Bakabon, Osomatsu kun), then Leiji Matsumoto (Yamato) and Rumiko Takahashi (Urusei Yatsura, Ranma ?). Then at one point, I stopped drawing. But after new wave artists like Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and Fumiko Takano (Zettai Anzen Kamisori) came out, I totally got inspired. I now had an artist's perspective of "You can also do this sort of thing by drawing", which gave me a renewed appreciation of it. Then I started drawing again. I like animation and manga, but because I'm so busy, I just don't have time to watch or read it. I want to see more.

Akadot: What do you think about Trigun's popularity in America?

YN: I'm glad. I really appreciate it.

Akadot: Is there a lot of pressure? Does that influence the story in any way?

YN: There is pressure, but it just encourages me more.

Trigun Anime Series

Akadot: What did you think about the TV series?

YN: I was pleased. I'm 100% satisfied.

Akadot: Did that have any influence on the story?

YN: Yes, it became a good influence.

Akadot: Are you planning on doing any side stories (Gaiden)?

YN: At one time, I did do a side story about Wolfwood. If I get the chance, I'd like to do it. But I'm not really thinking about that now.
