Letters to the Editor - 'Robotech' Debacle: Letters from fans about Akadot's 'Robotech' article
And from this side of the Atlantic:

Dear Akadot,

I'm not a hard-core psycho "Macross" fan or anything, but you got something wrong in your interview [with Carl Macek]. "Macross" was not a failure in Japan - where you got that, I don't know. It was quite popular; it spawned a big-budget animated movie, a big-Budget animated OVA ("Macross Plus," perhaps you've heard of it) and a successful little series called "Macross 7." Did you guys bother asking any Japanese people or animation execs as to whether or not "Macross" was a failure? As far as sci-fi anime, ask anyone in Japan. "Macross" is mentioned only after the "Gundam" property in terms of popularity.

And from the "Macross" message boards:

Dear Akadot,

I was urged by a friend at Macrossworld.com to send this to you. It is a post I wrote at the MacrossWorld forum. And, by the way, I am a fan of "Robotech," and I just bought the two new DVDs. I am not a "Macross" purist by any means.

Here's the post:
As soon as I read the article on Akadot I knew it was going to be hugely controversial. Here are some points I'd like to make.

1) If Akadot is an anime web site, how can it not know that "Macross" was a huge success? Mr. Reyes, do you know anything about anime history?

...

8) "In Japan, the release of the pre-Macek series was a complete and utter failure...the product couldn't be made any worse...worthless product ..." I have no respect for anyone that can publish this. It is offensive and downright deceitful.

Even though I am a fan of "Robotech," I was pretty outraged at this article -- hence the harsh words. I look forward to any replies you care to offer.

Take care,

Daniel Nutting

Harsh words, yes, but hardly unwarranted. Thank you all who responded. Akadot does offer balanced and insightful articles, interviews and reviews about anime and, though not infallible journalistically, will strive to open up our pages to any and all thoughtful opinions.

Thank you,

Luis Reyes
