Super Dragonball Z for PS2

- a review of the brand new fighter

Personally, I did not like this game because using the PS2 controller to execute special and combo attacks was difficult. If this game had more basic attack options other than “light attack” and “heavy attack” I probably would have gotten more into it like with other fighting games that have more basic attack options.

Call me old school, but I like the old 2-D fighting games because you know you can’t miss your opponent unless they dodge or block the attack. I found it irritating to finally initiate a special attack only to miss the opponent because they moved up or down in the environment and have to change my aim because I think they are moving in a certain direction.

The few things that I did like were the ability to create your own character card. With this character card you earn B.P. as you fight various opponents and gain experience so that you can train various skills in the game. These skills range from stat boosting to learning new techniques. This adds lots of game play because it takes at least five to ten good fights to earn enough experience points to train a new skill. But you have to learn these skills to be really competitive with the opponent because they do become difficult as you progress through the Original and Z Survivor modes.

There was just something about this Dragonball Z game that left me feeling like there was something missing. I’ve been a fan of the Dragonball Z series since the airing of it on Cartoon Network’s Toonami afternoon lineup. I can’t quite put my finger on it but the feeling that really hooked me into Dragonball Z just wasn’t in this game.

Overall, this game has decent graphics. Most games today are going for the realistic aspects, which still blow my mind away. Computer graphics have come a long way. But the gameplay is lacking and I doubt that any hardcore fighting game players will enjoy this game.
