Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!

Review of the Nintendo DS game

Am I really that old?! There is no way this can be true! I’m not going to reveal my starting brain age because I’m too embarrassed by it.

Aside from the outrageous brain age that I started with, this game is loads of fun and very educational. Skills that I know that I was good at before have become dull because I no longer practice them. I found this out quickly while playing the calculations game. Sure, simple arithmetic problems sound easy enough to do but when you add speed it becomes much harder. Even though you can spend as much time as you want on each problem, the object is to answer them correctly and as quickly as possible. And don’t think you can get the best possible time score by answering with an incorrect answer because if you do you get time added to your completion time. This isn’t so easy when you are trying to beat your own time score everyday.

Calculations aren’t the only game included. There are several different games that require different kinds of thinking and activate various parts of your brain in order to stimulate activity in all parts rather than having an idle brain. Other games like Low to High require you to memorize a set of numbers in a short time then touch them from low to high. Easy? Not when you only get about a second to memorize the numbers and in each advancing round it adds another number to the mix.

Other games that are included are Syllable Count, Reading Aloud, Stroop Test, Speed Counting, Connect Maze, Head Count, and many more!

This game is not meant to be played for hours and hours on end in one sitting but only for a few minutes everyday. As the more days you play the more features you will unlock from more games, learning more secrets within the game, and different options like changing your stamp.

Holding your DS sideways and in one had is actually quite comfortable. This game requires you to hold your DS like a book, while writing on the touch screen. The direction of the screen will depend which hand you write with.

The two big issues that I had with this game was that you have to write clearly enough for the game to recognize what you are writing. Otherwise you risk getting a wrong answer. The other issue is the voice recognition for the Stroop test. It requires you to enunciate the colors carefully because if you don’t you’ll have to repeat it over and over until it recognizes the correct answer. The more times you have to repeat an answer the lower your overall score will be.

Overall, I strongly recommend this game, especially if you love puzzle games. It’s also good if you want a simple game you can play at those times you find yourself with a few spare minutes waiting for something.
