Super Princess Peach

Review of Nintendo DS Game

03-1-2006

Bowser is at it again but this time he hasn't kidnapped the Princess but the Mario Bros. Who ever will save them from his evil claws? Princess Peach is not up to this challenge, is she!?

You must guide Princess Peach and her magical umbrella, Perry, across eight different side-scrolling levels to save the Mario Bros. Armed with unique abilities called Vibes of Joy, Rage, Gloom, and Calm, Princess Peach will battle familiar enemies, and discover Vibe Island with the mysterious power of the Vibes.

For the most part the game is played using the control buttons and varying usage of the touch screen when you need to use your Vibes. The mini games utilize the DS's features such as the mic to make Toad jump over enemies and holes and using the touch screen to shoot down different balloons.

I found this game fun for the first few levels and quite easy. Most of the obstacles in the levels were easy to get past because of the many help boxes that are present, telling you what Vibes you need to use to move on or access hidden items that are not really hidden. But for those few obstacles that you don't get any help for, they can be quite hard figuring out.

There are many extras in this game including mini games, puzzles, and a music room. In order to gain access to these features you must find them thoughout the levels or purchase them from the store. These mini games provide a nice break in your adventure and not to mention can be a work out for your lungs. And upon successfully completing each stage you are rewarded with coins that you can use to spend in the shop to buy more levels or other goodies.

The graphics are bright and colorful for this game. The graphics and animation on the touch screen are fun to watch the first few times when you activate the various Vibes but after a while they become annoying to watch and remind me of animations from pinball machines because of the repetitious movements.

Even though this game is simple and easily beaten in a matter of a few hours, it doesn't end there when you save Mario but when you have completed collected all the puzzle pieces and traveling through the extra stages that follow the boss stage. These stages are more difficult but do not offer too much difficulty to complete and are short to travel through.

Aside from my complaints on this game being too easy, it is still a lot of fun trying to find and collect all the extras, which add hours of game play. And if you really want a more difficult game to play try playing without using any of the help boxes. Now if you will excuse me, I have a couple more puzzle pieces to find.

Pros:

*Princess Peach finally gets to kick some Bowser butt for all the years that she has endured kidnapping.

*The Vibes redefine expressing your emotions.

*Little time is needed to learn the basics of the game.

*There are information boxes everywhere to help you on your journey.

Cons:

*Game play and levels are fairly easy for the average gamer.

*Using the Vibes can be quite annoying at points.

*Information boxes get annoying and give away too much to solving in game puzzles.

*You canft squish goombas!

Overall:

This game is definitely worth checking out and playing.
