High and Mighty Color

A review of their debut album GOOVER

High and Mighty Color is a group from Japan that debuted in January 2005 with their single “Pride”, and their much-anticipated album GOOVER was released in September 2005. They have gained massive popularity in Japan over a short time.

Do not judge this album by its title track “GOOVER”. From the first track I expected the entire album to be more along the lines of the J-Rock genre, but that was wrong to assume. The rest of the album is upbeat and fun to listen to.

It wasn’t until I started to listen to the third track “Pride” that I realized I knew them. This was High and Mighty Color’s debut single and this track was featured as an opening theme song to the immensely popular Gundam Seed Destiny series. Some of you may have already heard this track before when it was released on Tofu Records’ J-Pop CD 2.

Many of the other tracks on this album are a blend of J-Rock and J-Pop styles that mix well with each other. None of their tracks rehash the same beats and they use different blends of Rock and Pop styles to create exciting new sounds from both genres.

This six member group comes from Okinawa where they have won numerous awards prior to their debut release. Comprised of Meg, Sassy, Kazuto, mACKAz, Yusuke, and Maki, the group has created a unique style in the vein of the Pop-Rock genre.

If you are a fan of J-Pop/J-Rock I don’t think that you’ll be disappointed. Look for this album in March along with the release of the Gundam Seed Destiny series.
