The Kunihiko Ikuhara Drinking Game

by Akadot Staff

05-16-2001

With Kunihiko Ikuhara in Los Angeles, the Akadot staff has been ushering the 'Utena' director around - going to the beach, cruising the Walk of Fame, drinking at the Sky Bar. However, Ikuni, the nickname by which we now refer to him, doesn't drink. Wishing to include him in our drunken Angelino festivities, Akadot has made Ikuhara-san the focus of a new drinking game, which we now present to you.

The Kunihiko Ikuhara Drinking Game

Note: Granted, a basic knowledge of Ikuhara's idiosyncratic ticks are essential for the game (as well as having Ikuhara in attendance) but this game, more than an alcoholic diversion, can serve as an educational piece on the habits of one Ikuni.

While kicking it with Ikuni, follow the proceeding rules:

Rule 1:

If his clothing ensemble consists of brighter colors than yours, take a drink.

Rule 2:

Every time he alludes to a girl's beauty, take a drink and then offer her a drink.

Rule 3:

If he begins to hum a tune (using his characteristic "chu, chu, chu" syllables) as he's walking around, take a drink. Take two if you begin to hum along.

Rule 4:

Every time he slips an English phrase he's learned into conversation (we're really looking forward to this rule when he finishes his English class) take a drink. Take two if it's a whole sentence and down the bottle if it's a recitation of Charles Bukowski's essays on Los Angeles.

Rule 5:

Every time he comes face to face with a 'Sailor Moon' ad, take a drink. Take two if he then assumes that pose. If you also assume the pose, you've had a little too much, so drink yourself sober with another sip.

Rule 6:

Whenever Ikuni strikes a pose, everyone match it. If someone breaks before he does, the whole group has to drink

Rule 7:

Everyone match, with an alcoholic beverage, glass for glass what Ikuni sips of his non-alcoholic beverage.

Rule 8:

Whoever gets a direct answer about the meaning of 'Sailor Moon' and 'Utena' from Ikuhara-san deserves a free drink.

Rule 9:

If you stand up and spout a line from 'Utena,' give someone else in the group a ten count. If it's in Japanese, have someone slam a shot. If Ikuhara answers you with the follow up line, you slam a shot. If Ikuhara glares out you with a stern expression cemented on his otherwise friendly face, don't drink anymore.

Rule 10:

Every time a big Hollywood actress walks into the same room as Ikuhara, take a drink. If someone then proceeds to walk up to said Hollywood personality singing the praises of our own Ikuhara-san as a one of the pillars of Japanese animation, everyone else has to drink. If Ms. Hollywood then steals Ikuni away ... game over.
